Tree time

Collecting the silicone mold from the living tree — without harming it — on the trail at Lapham Peak.

Further views

The leaning oak seen from uphill, its sawn stub and kinked trunk rising among red pines.

A pale clay slab pressed onto the leaning oak's bark to take its impression.

The oak's leaning trunk with the clay impression in place, its exposed sapwood scar visible at the base.

Twisting dark limbs of the oak against blue sky, its leaves turning gold and rust.

Close-up of the kneaded clay slab molded onto the oak's ridged bark.

The oak's deeply ridged bark in raking light, gold-green oak leaves flaring behind the trunk.
